Best Apps for Finding Campgrounds (Pet-Owner Tested)

Campground discovery apps are abundant. What separates the useful ones for pet owners from the ones that look good until you need actual pet policy data.

What Pet Owners Need From a Campground Discovery App

Standard campground discovery is about location, price, amenities, and reviews. Pet owners need all of that plus: breed restriction status, size limit information, pet fee amount upfront, whether dogs have trail access, and ideally proximity to emergency veterinary services. No standard campground app covers all of these. Here's how the main options compare.

Waggle Places

Only app with breed and size filtering built in. 28,000+ verified locations with pet fee data and vet mapping. Purpose-built for the pet-owner discovery use case. $2.99/month after free trial. Best for: finding campgrounds where your specific dog is verified to be welcome.

The Dyrt

Largest review database with strong photo coverage. 'Pets allowed' indicator without depth. Community reviews occasionally mention pet experiences. Best for: supplemental campground research after Waggle Places has provided a verified shortlist.

Campendium

Cell signal data is the differentiator. Strong free and dispersed camping focus. No pet-specific features. Best for: boondocking discovery and cell coverage planning.

Recreation.gov

Required for federal land reservations — not a discovery app but a mandatory booking tool. Basic 'pets allowed' filter. Best for: booking national park and national forest campgrounds once you've identified them.

Campspot

Private campground booking with real-time availability. No pet filters. Best for: booking private campgrounds once you've verified pet policies elsewhere.
